The Void

The word does feel a bit hollow and empty, but at the same time it seems to be a place of peace and fullness. It is where everything comes from and everything goes into. Lao Tsu's talks about the Void as the space needed in order to find meaning. By Void I mean the experience of complete surrender to that which cannot be defined. It is more like living in the present moment and embracing each moment as it is, and not what we want it to be. There should be no place for judgement. I think living in the true spirit of this word is challenging but once the concept is embraced it might not be that difficult to do especially when we have old habits and patterns of thinking.

I think there just has to be space - within ourselves most importantly. Space to search. I think sometimes our minds are just so cluttered with external things such as need to belong somewhere or become someone, power, money, conflict and unmet materialistic needs, etc, that restrict one's capacity to increase self awareness. External things tend to cause anxiety and always will since they are forever changing. The challenge is to find a constant within. The more we cling to the external the more freedom we lose internally. Then finding something constant feels like an unreal goal. I guess the difficult part is to try and figure out what one finds constant in - it takes trial and error. I turned back to my spiritual base and found that there is a lot of solace to be found in scripture and philosophy. Sometimes losing sight of one's spiritual path can make one feel lost within.

I suppose any creativity that happens arises from the space of emptiness and the void within. I think creativity (in any form) arises from the point where the individual first becomes acquainted with that space within. The earlier this process starts the better it is. When there is no empty space within oneself - there is no space available to explore the inner artist. The need for satisfying self-expression is one of the most basic needs of human beings in order to self-actualize. I admire people who understand the importance of this. I admire people who can reach that space within and find expression of it. Art sure is the universal language from which this subjective experience of the Void is expressed by human beings. People get a chance to look at it, understand it and also appreciate another's experience of the Void.
